Why Practice Pilgrimage?

In the Western world, it’s easy for us to do what the early church didn’t have the luxury of doing: get comfortable. We have homes with soft beds, enough food, and a social life that brings us emotional stability. Many of us don’t really need God in our daily lives—we don’t have to trust him for each meal or to guide us each day. Going on a pilgrimage moves us from our normal. Distractions disperse, and suddenly our focus is completely on God.

In traveling

we center

our souls

on Christ.

We tune into

our Home

that’s bigger than

the place we live,

our job, and family.

We listen,

unwind,

and find again

our heart’s rhythm,

drawing near to God,

and him to us.

Unlike the Old Testament believers, we don’t have to travel to Jerusalem to be in God’s presence, because Christ dwells in our hearts by faith. Yet, we can encounter the Holy Spirit in really beautiful ways as we “set our hearts on pilgrimage” and take an adventure with him. The people we meet and the experiences we have on a pilgrimage will last a lifetime.
